The New Man
We might just as well say that a born again Christian becomes two persons at the moment of the new birth because that's really the easiest way to explain it. They actually become an amalgamated mixture of the old genus of Man in Adam, and the new genus of Man in Christ— one born naturally, and the other born supernaturally.
When people are born into this world, they come in it as the offspring of Adam, who himself is the seed and the rootstock of the human race. So then, he is related to everybody as an ancestor; and I'm sure you can easily see right off that it would be ridiculous to say he is our sibling.
Adam's color means nothing at all because according to Acts 17:26, God made from one man (one blood actually) every race and gender of peoples that populate the Earth today. So then, biblically, Adam was the beginner of the human race as you and I know it. Some feel that the current human race is the lone survivor of other hominids from the past. But the Bible does not teach that.
At 1Cor 15:45-49 there is a stunning revelation: Christ is another Adam. But he isn't another physical Adam engendering his posterity in the normal, natural way because we know from 1Cor 15:45 that he is the supernatural life-giving spirit of the new birth of John 3:3-8. So then, everyone who is *born again* is automatically transferred into Christ's new genus of Man.
Adam's family is completely and totally damned because the Bible says that in Adam, all die (1Cor 15:22). So only in Christ's family do sinners have hope of inheriting the kingdom of God because according to 1Cor 15:50, natural-born human beings cannot inherit it.
●Ephesians 2:10...."For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus....."
That is probably the best concise description of born again Christians as one can find in the New Testament. They are a new kind of creation. Not just adherents to a religion; but as the original human race came into existence with the first Adam; a second one has come into existence through another Adam Christ.
Out ahead, beyond the Messianic era, is coming a totally new universe. It is going to be populated with a totally new kind of human being; similar in many respects to the first, but enhanced by many new design changes. Adam's kind, along with the entire universe that houses them, is slated for complete removal. Christ is a second Adam; and he is the origin of a new, permanent genus of Man that will live forever in a brand new universe of its own.
●1Corinthians 15:42-45 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
●2Corinthians 5:16-17...So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.
That poor verse has been so hammered by well meaning preachers who believe that the new birth is the solution to breaking bad habits like smoking and gambling, gay and lesbianism, and whatever else everybody seems to think is so bad. But really, all in the world that verse is saying is that the redeemed are people of a new Genesis.
However, while we remain in a mortal body, the passions and impulses of mortal human nature will continue to plague us till this body finally dies because our old self is a part of it. So please don't expect too much from born again Christians. They honestly have split personalities one in Adam, and one in Christ. But one day, the Adamic one will be deleted. And then Christ's nature alone will have complete control.
For now; their original self in Adam is reckoned extinct. The reality of that extinction doesn't appear in this life. Born again Christians still commit sin from time to time. But God has it on the books that they are dead and gone. It is only just a matter of time till their Adamic bodies die and then the redeemed sinner gets to begin enjoying the benefits of his new self. Regeneration takes the sorrow out of death and actually makes it something for the redeemed to look forward to.
●Hosea 13:14...I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes. (NKJ)
●1Corinthians 15:53-57...For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (NIV)
●Colossians 3:1-4 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
In the meanwhile, one of the benefits of the Spirit is purposed to help the regenerated live with their dark side.
●Galatians 5:22-23...But the fruit of the Spirit is (among other things) .self control .
The New Self
Although it's difficult to comprehend, the new self, which God's spirit generates within redeemed sinners through the new birth, is totally sinless. It never commits a sin of any kind. I'll show you why.
We know from 1John 3:9 that nobody who is born of God commits sin, because God's seed remains in him. He cannot sin because he has the nature of God; just like a baby guinea pig got the nature of a guinea pig from it's guinea pig parents. This is very, very, easy to demonstrate just by looking at Jesus of Nazareth.
We know from Luke 1:35 and John 1:18 that God engendered him. We also know from John 8:29 and 1Peter 2:22 he never once committed a single sin in his entire life. So then, Jesus Christ is irrefutable proof that an offspring of God never sins.
When believers comply with 1John 1:9 and confess their sins; it's important to know that none of those sins were committed by their new self. No way! They are the works of mortal human nature; their old self. Their new immortal self never needs forgiveness because we know from John 17:2-3 and 2Peter 1:2-4, believers have been given a Divine nature that makes it impossible for their new self to sin.
We know from Romans 8:1 there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ. But our natural self, engendered by the first Adam, is not the one that's in Christ. No! It's in Adam, and that's where it stays. The new self is in Christ; and we know from 1John 3:5-6 that in him there is no sin.
A New Creation
We know from 2Corinthians 5:17 and Ephesians 2:10 believers have become a new creation, but in no way a true genetic offspring of God. Otherwise it could not be said at John 1:18 that Jesus is the only begotten son of God.
Jesus' relationship to Almighty God is different than the born again Christian's. We really aren't God's offspring in the very same way that Jesus is because according to John 1:14 and 1:18 and 3:16, Jesus is the only true offspring that God has.
●And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
●No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
●For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
We know from Romans 8:15-16, Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 1:5, and 1John 3:1, that although believers are born of God's spirit, their position as a child in the family of God is really only by adoption and not by birth.
A New Genus
Today, biblically, Adam's family is divided into two distinct classes of people the Jew and the Gentile. But we know from Ephesians 2:14-16 God is busy taking individuals out of both groups and making up an entirely new genus of Man wherein gender, race, class, culture, and religion mean anything.
●Ephesians 2:15 His purpose was to create in himself one new Man out of the two, thus making peace,
●Galatians 3:26-29....You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."
Abraham was an amazing guy. He had a dual posterity. A natural one that is growing out of Isaac; and a supernatural one that is growing out of Christ. Isaac's line are genetic Hebrews; but Christ's is not. His posterity has no ethnic identity at all other than said to be "in him."
Isaac's offspring are generated by men and women who descended from Adam. But Christ's offspring are generated by God's spirit, who descended from no man; but from God.
●John 3:6-8 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying: You must be born again. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
The new genus of Man, although considered the seed of Abraham, is not genetically related to Abraham in any way at all.
●1Corinthians 15:45-49 So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.
Christ Vs Adam
Confusion will result if we aren't careful to keep a sharp distinction between Adam and Christ.
Christ's new human race has absolutely never, ever been tainted by the Devil because, unlike his easy victory over the first Adam, the Serpent totally failed to tempt the second.
●1John 3:8-9 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
I like the King James because it is so blunt and unmistakable. Some are of the opinion that passage means born again Christians sin once in a while, but not all the time. And that is true of course. But that particular verse does not pertain to born again Christians per se. It pertains to a person who has been born of God. There is a difference. We'll look at it.
Born again Christians are prone to sin.
●1John 1:8 & 10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
But he that is born of God; that is, the new self God's spirit created by the new birth, never sins. It never even has a tendency to sin, nor a sinful desire, nor a bad attitude, nor an evil passion nor a sinful thought. And the reason the new self cannot ever sin is because it takes after its father God's spirit, the one who engendered it. It doesn't take after the Devil, and it doesn't take after Adam. It takes after God's spirit. And God's spirit not only does not sin it cannot sin.
The new self cannot be influenced by human nature because it is controlled by the Divine nature.
●2Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
●Romans 6:8-11...Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. (NIV)
We know from Romans 5:12 that all of Adam's posterity became evil through his disobedience in Eden. But we know from Romans 5:17-19 that all of Christ's are sinless because his perfect obedience preserved the righteousness of his own posterity. So now, because of his success, it is impossible for even one single member of his posterity to do anything evil. They always please God. They never please the Devil.
Some struggle with that because they've been led to believe that the new self occasionally sins now and then although it doesn't continually sin. Let me ask you: Does God sin once in a while?
God's seed (the nature of Christ) remains in the one who is begotten by him. The family of God has the nature of Jesus Christ. It has none of the nature of the first Adam, and positively none of the nature of the Devil because we know from 1John 3:8 whoever sins is an offspring of the Devil.
We know from John 5:25 that those who are born of God are actually risen from the dead. And we know from John 11:25 that Jesus himself is the resurrection. So if the new genus of Man, which is a product of resurrection, is doing sinful things; then Jesus is doing some too because we know from Galatians 3:27 and Colossians 1:27 that Christ is what we can expect of the new Man.
If those who are born of God cannot do a sin, does that mean that born again Christians are sinless? NO! Absolutely not. We know from 1John 1:8 and 1:10 if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
And even Paul confessed at Romans 7:18 he knew that nothing good lived in him, that is, in his sinful nature. For he had the desire to do what is good, but he could not carry it out.
The new genus of Man, in and of itself, is technically not a Christian. True born again Christians, at least for now, are actually strange amalgams of Adam the sinful Man, and of Christ the sinless Man. And we know from 1Corinthians 15:51-57 it's an amalgam that won't be broken up until our natural mortal bodies die.
●John 3:6...What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
It adds up to two births. One of flesh and one of spirit. How is it possible to exist as two persons? I can't imagine. But it's not impossible. After all, doesn't God's word exist as a God Being and also as a human being both at the same time?
●John 1:1-14...In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God......And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (NKJ)
So for now the evil nature of the old Man, which is inherent to the Adamic body, will continue to make us sin until these natural bodies finally bite the dust. Only then will the new sinless self ever really come on line a hundred and ten percent.
Now that's going to be something. Can you imagine how weird it will be free of malice, worry, greed, avarice, lust, strife, hatred, hostility, depression, moods, fear, anxiety, resentment, tension, ego, gender bias, fatigue, time pressure, sexual lusts, rivalry, and all of the other negative stuff that tends to make us miserable with each other and with life in general?
